Venerable Zhen Ru’s Dharma sharing on 7/6/07
By Hong Yew Chye

Beware if you receive an e-mail congratulating you of a windfall of a few thousand US dollars from a lucky draw. Venerable Zhen Ru shared his experience of being selected the “lucky” recipient of USD3,000. This is but one of the numerous scams that have been flooding the internet, conning unsuspecting victims into parting with their money in their greed to acquire more money. Fortunately, being a monk of steadfast precept and with a profound understanding of the dharma, he saw through the folly of greed and immediately rejected the offer without further ado.

Venerable Zhen Xin, also narrated the syndicate's modus operandi as reported by one of the Sunday School volunteers. The trickster would inform the selected “lucky “ recipient to deposit a sum of money of about RM3,000 to a certain account number, citing it as a foreign exchange requirement before the price money in US dollars could be delivered. Luckily as the recipient did not have enough funds in hand, he approached a friend who managed to save him from being RM3,000 poorer. If you find it difficult to grasp the Noble Truth of “Craving/Greed” being the cause of suffering, remember the saying, “There is no such thing as a free lunch.”

Venerable Zen Ru also shared the dharma which he learnt from the 13th Pure Land patriarch, Venerable Yin Kwang. He quoted Venerable Yin Kwang's illumination on the perennial question of the purpose of one's life and the four important virtues that guide one to practice and realize that purpose. The four virtues are: Loving kindness, Forbearance, Responsibility and Realization.

Venerable Zhen Ru also reiterated Venerable Wei Wu's exhortation on the observance and practice of the Five Precepts and Ten Moral Precepts.

Later, Venerable Zhen Ru presented birthday gifts to Than Hsiang's staff whose birthdays fell on the month of June.
