Registration of Marriages
Introduction
In December 2004, Than Hsiang Temple was assigned by the government to be the Pendaftaran Perkawinan Daerah Barat Daya. Couples staying in the South West District of Penang Island or elsewhere in Penang can thus register their marriages at Than Hsiang Temple besides doing so at the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara ( National Registration) offices in Anson Road, Balik Pulau and Sungai Ara.
Couples, wishing to register their marriage, at Than Hsiang Temple may do every Friday at 7.30pm and on the first Saturday of each month at 2.30pm. This gives working couples a convenient avenue for registering their marriages outside of office hours.
Assistant Registrar of Marriages
The registration of marriage is conducted by Mr. Khoo Kay Seang, the Assistant Registrar of Marriages, in a simple and solemn ceremony. Mr. Khoo is a retired naval officer and he is also a Juvenile Court Advisor.
Procedure
Malaysian citizens of 21 years and above in age may register their marriage. To do so they have to:
- Obtain an Application Form from any of the National Registration offices in Penang and present a recent passport size photograph from each of the couple.
- Both of the couple will need to submit their National Registration Identity Cards for scanning to determine whether the marital status is single or divorced and not married. If single or divorced, the form will be chopped and signed by the officer in the National Registration Department.
- Take the form and swear before a Commissioner of Oath that you are 21 years or above in age and there are no encumbrances in marriage to people of other religions.
- Take the signed form to Than Hsiang Temple together with the following from each person:
- Three photocopies of the National Registration Identity Card (on A4 size paper).
- Three photocopies of the Birth Certificate.
- Three photocopies of the Marriage Witness' National Registration Identity Card (on A4 size paper).
Fee
There is a Government Fee of RM20.00 to be paid for registration of the marriage and an optional RM6.00 for two transparent plastic covers for the two Marriage Certificates.
Other services
Than Hsiang Temple, under its Mitra Welfare Centre, also conducts Pre- and Post-marital Workshops for couples. The Pre-marital Workshop is held twice a year around March and September. For details, please contact Mitra Welfare Centre at 04-6451141.
In October of each year corresponding to the Mid Autumn Festival (Moon Cake Festival), Than Hsiang Temple will organise a Buddhist Mass Wedding Ceremony. Loving married couples can have a Buddhist Wedding Blessing Service followed by a photography session and a Wedding Luncheon at a special package deal. For further details please contact Sis.
