Chinese New Year Lamp Lighting

Every year Than Hsiang Temple holds Chinese New Year lamp lighting for ten days, starting from Chinese New Year eve to the 9 th day of Chinese New Year for the good of many. All the donations collected during this period will be contributed to the Metta Free Clinic Fund.

Light is ever a symbol of knowledge and dispelling of darkness. Darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge. Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces: wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression, and suffering. Lamp lighting is especially more significant when done during the New Year as it symbolises dispelling the year ahead of darkness and bringing light to all.
