The Malaysian Buddhist Sangha Association held its Annual General Meeting on August 31, 2025 , at the ground floor small hall of Than Hsiang Temple in Penang. Following the meeting, lunch dana was offered to all annual members.
Firstly, It began with Theravada monks leading the chanting of the Offering Verses, followed by Mahayana monk’s Venerable Zhen Ru continuing to lead the chanting. At the same time, Lay devotees knelt together devoted and sincere in chanting, offering their hearts and intentions to the Triple Gem. The atmosphere was solemn and dignified.
Theravada and Mahayana Sangha members proceeded to have their meal. After the meal, lay devotees respectfully offered red packets and goodie bags to all the Sangha members. The atmosphere was warm and solemn.
Most Venerable Wei Wu gave a dharma talk to everyone. Venerable mentioned that this year’s MBSA Sangha Offering Ceremony was conducted on a modest scale. Venerable further explained that he would be giving a teaching based on the Ullambana Sutra, which holds similar significance to the Kathina celebration in the Theravada tradition.
Venerable noted the temple also observes a three-month vassa period. In the Theravada tradition, this retreat corresponds to Chinese summer. In contrast, the Chinese Mahayana tradition observes vassa during the summer months, typically beginning two months earlier—immediately after Wesak Day.
Furthermore, the Venerable mentioned that most of the devotees present were from Than Hsiang Temple. On the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, the temple will hold a special ceremony in conjunction with Buddha Joyful Day. Therefore, the Venerable warmly welcomes everyone to participate.
Lastly, Most Venerable Wei Wu expressed appreciation to all the Sangha members who attended and received offerings from the Lay Sangha Members. He encouraged everyone to continue working in harmony, and in the great cooperation between of the Sangha members of different Buddhist traditions.
Afterward, the Theravada monk led the chanting in concluding the meal and dedicating the merits. Following this, the Mahayana monk ‘s Venerable Zhen Ru continued to lead the chanting for the meal conclusion, and merit dedication.
After the dedication ceremony was complete, Sangha members from both the Theravada and Mahayana traditions gradually took their leave. With this the MBSA Sangha Offering Ceremony concluded successfully.
