Monday, 6 April 2026 — According to the Lunar Calendar, this was the 19th day of the 2nd month, coinciding with Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s Birthday. On this auspicious day, Venerable Hui Shan was ordained under the guidance of Most Venerable Wei Wu at Than Hsiang Temple.
Hair shaving ceremony
On 5 April 2026, the eve of Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s Birthday, the hair-shaving ceremony was held at 7 p.m. in the nuns’ monastery. Venerable Hui Shan’s hair was shaved by Venerable Zhen Ti, in a solemn and dignified atmosphere, amidst the chanting of the Buddha’s name and the blessings of sangha members and family.
Ordination Ceremony
The ordination ceremony took place on Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s Birthday in the Main Shrine Hall on the sixth floor. Conducted with great solemnity, it was presided over by Most Venerable Wei Wu, with Venerable Zhen Ti serving as ritual master. The chanting led by the sangha members deeply moved the assembly.
The ceremony began with the ritual of inviting Most Venerable Wei Wu. Guided by the ritual master and sangha members, the novice nun respectfully welcomed her preceptor. The sound of drums and bells accompanied the procession into the hall.
Following this, the repentance segment was conducted. Most Venerable Wei Wu led the novice nun in chanting the repentance verses three times, each line followed by a prostration, expressing sincere remorse for past misdeeds and vowing to cultivate diligently.
After the repentance, Most Venerable Wei Wu performed the hair-shaving ritual:
- First shave: vow to sever all evil
- Second shave: vow to cultivate all good
- Third shave: vow to liberate all beings
Subsequently, the novice nun took refuge, received the Ten Novice Precepts, and was formally given the Man Yi (Precept Robe). With firm resolve and a clear voice, she answered respectfully: “I will uphold them.”
The ceremony concluded with Most Venerable Wei Wu’s compassionate exhortation to the new novice nun: to cultivate the Five Virtues, uphold the precepts, maintain compassion and humility, and guard against negligence. The novice nun replied with reverence: “I will follow the teachings.” The assembly then dedicated merit through chanting and prostrations.
At the end of the ceremony, commemorative photos were taken with Most Venerable Wei Wu, sangha members, family, and the assembly. From then on, the novice nun was known as Venerable Hui Shan. She then proceeded to the Patriarch Hall to pay homage to the lineage masters, marking the completion of the ordination ceremony.
About Venerable Hui Shan
Venerable Hui Shan, lay name Ang Su Eng, was born in Malaysia in 1952 and is now 74 years old. Before ordination, she had already begun studying Buddhism. She also frequently visited other temples for retreats and practice.
In an interview with reporter Mei Yue, Venerable Hui Shan explained her motivation for ordination:
“Life is impermanent, and the world is filled with suffering and little joy. Therefore, I decided to renounce, to cut off afflictions, to be released from suffering and attain nibbana, and to vow to liberate all sentient beings.”
