The official opening ceremony of the new Than Hsiang vegetarian restaurant and souvenir shop is scheduled at 9.30am on 1st of May (Thurs) and Ven. Wei Wu, the abbot of the temple, will conduct the cleansing ceremony.

Than Hsiang temple started its vegetarian canteen in 1992, to promote a healthy and nutritious vegetarian diet. In 1999, with the completion of Than Hsiang multi-storey building, the canteen expanded and it incorporated an air-conditioned restaurant.

The objective of setting up the vegetarian canteen and restaurant is to encourage and attract more people to cultivate the healthy life style of consuming vegetarian food. The preparation of the vegetarian dishes is strictly in compliance with hygienic requirement, moreover special care has been taken to use minimal cooking oil. Customers have a wide choice of delicious dishes and a selection of white or unpolished rice. A variety of hot and cold drinks are available too. The spacious and airy dinning area provides a comfortable ambience for your eating pleasure. The canteen and restaurant is strategically located at the hub of factory zone and the busy office and factory workers will find the ample parking space next to the temple extremely convenient.

The Than Hsiang souvenir shop has also offered a wide range of products for the convenience of devotees and visitors. Products include shrine and altar objects, ceremonial attire, electronic lamps, Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, Buddhist books and journals and a host of praying paraphernalia.
With the perennial expansion of Than Hsiang activities in education and welfare works, Ven Wei Wu , in line with Buddhist concept of “ right living”, has initiated the setting up of vegetarian eatery and souvenirs as income-generating sources to sponsor and sustain the temple’s activities.

The proposal finally led to the massive renovation done to the existing facilities after the Chinese New Year. The existing canteen has been moved to the present location sandwiched between the new building and the Hall of Great Compassion (ta pei tian). Than Hsiang has also introduced a new system of payment for economy rice section whereby the dishes will be weighed and charged on the basis of as you eat more, you pay more and vice versa. This method is deemed to be more fair. Besides the economy rice, vegetarian mee dishes, pao(dumplings) and tidbits are also on sale.
Two new ventures in our expansion plan include an enlarged organic vegetarian restaurant which operates daily, and a new relocated and redecorated souvenir shop mentioned earlier. A tea drinking cum reading corner is within its compound, for the drinking pleasure of tea- drinking enthusiasts.

As usual, vegetarian buffet will be served on every new moon and full day of lunar month.

As the 14th anniversary of Wan Chin Yan also falls on 1st May, a joint celebration is scheduled together with the launching of the new vegetarian canteen, the organic restaurant and the souvenir shop. Ven. Wei Wu will officiate the cleansing ceremony. Refreshments and kueh will be served thereafter.
