Early at 8.30am on 10 January 2006, a large group of staff and volunteers gathered at the Hall of Great Compassion (Dai Bei Dian) to listen to a short talk by Venerable Wei Wu before the great spring cleaning of the year got underway. Venerable Wei Wu said that although it was traditional to do a big cleaning once a year, he advised everyone to do cleaning throughout the year so that not much dirt and rubbish would accumulate; else it would be a tough job in doing the spring cleaning. Similarly, we should throw out the dirt and rubbish in our minds and keep a clean, moral life throughout the year.

Venerable Wei Wu commented that during spring cleaning, a lot of people tend to throw out old stuff and buy new things for the New Year. He advised that we should not be so wasteful. Instead, we should still use the old things or give them to others if we really don't want them any more. We should avoid throwing things away needlessly and help keep our environment clean too.

After Venerable Wei Wu's talk, the gathering was split up into five groups. Bro. Hong led one group to clean the compound and surroundings of the temple while Mrs. Balan led another group in cleaning the Hall of Great Compassion (Dai Bei Dian) and columbarium (San Sheng Dian). The Main Shrine Hall would be cleaned by Sis. Soon Ee and her group, and the Multi Purpose Hall would be cleaned by another group led by Sis. Cheng See. The Sangha members and some volunteers would clean the building's three staircases.

The whole temple was soon a bustled with the cleaning activities. Here and there, someone was cleaning the drains, wiping the windowpanes, dusting the cobwebs from the ceilings, sweeping and mopping the floors, and a host of other cleaning activities. Time passed quickly and in just three hours the whole temple was spick and span.

At twelve noon, everyone gathered at Dai Bei Dian to listen to Venerable Wei Wu, who reiterated that we should not wait till once a year to do house cleaning. Throughout the year we should keep the house clean. Similarly, we should throw out our defilements and keep clean ethically and morally throughout the whole year.

Venerable Wei Wu then led everyone in the transference of merits, after which the assembly dispersed for yam rice lunch at the canteen. After lunch, the volunteers left for home, tired out but happy at having done a great job in helping to clean Than Hsiang Temple. The temple staff went back to their normal work, tired but happy in the knowledge that their working environment is thoroughly cleaned for another year.
