Early in June this year, there was a Youth Camp and in December, Than Hsiang Sunday School organized A Children's Camp for children of ten to twelve years of age. More than two hundred children participated in this camp held from 2 nd to 4 th December 2005.
The aim of this camp was to create a helpful, harmonious and loving society by teaching the children good moral values. Activities included morning and evening chanting. Venerable Zhen Xin taught the children the physical aspects of performing the religious ceremony like how to bow and prostrate properly.
Sis. Gan Geok Eng, a graduate from University Sri Lanka, gave the children a talk on “Cause and Effect” – the karmic effects of one's actions. Bro. Cao De Chuan, a University Sains Malaysia graduate in Education and also a holder of Masters in Business and Management, talked to the children on the Buddha as a Role Model for the children to learn from. Incidentally, both Sis. Gan and Bro. Cao are Than Hsiang Sunday School volunteer teachers.
Of course, no children's camp could be without fun and games. The children participated whole-heartedly in the games and songs. I do believe the children were most happy when playing those games and singing the songs.
There was one session where the old folks from Wan Ching Yuan Centre were invited to the Camp for the children to interact with them. It was hoped the children would learn to be caring and compassionate, especially to their elders. On the last day of the Camp, all the parents were invited to attend a concert performed by the children. Needless to say, the parents were most proud and happy to see their children performing for them. All in all, it could be said that this was another successful Camp. We hope to see the children again in next year's camp.
