Abstract

According to the Sarvāstivāda’s classification of the four conditions,
samanantara-pratyaya refers to the citta-caitta dharma that serves as the condition of the arising of the citta-caitta in the immediately following moment. As the idea of samanantara-pratyaya was established later than the other three pratyaya-s, early Ābhidharmikas might not have reached a consensus over the special situation of acitta-samāpatti concerning the samanantara-pratyaya. On the other hand, the Dārṣṭāntika pioneers such as Dharmatrāta and Buddhadeva et al., with each of their distinct theories about citta-caitta dharma-s and their interpretations of samanantara-pratyaya, posed theoretical challenges to the Ābhidharmikas’ explanation over the issue of the saṃtati. Furthermore, some other Dārṣṭāntika-vibhajyavādas even recognize rūpa-dharma-s as samanantara-pratyaya.
These opinions of Dārṣṭāntikas, more or less, later influenced Sautrāntika’s doctrine of samanantara-pratyaya and body-mind relation.
