A Family Day celebration was held to celebrate Mother’s and Father’s day with the old folks of Wan Ching Yuen and their family members. This was a gathering to give the young opportunity to show their love and care to old folks on this special occasion.

This is the first time that we have arranged for a meaningful get together lunch where we encouraged all family members to share a meal with the old folks. About 20 tables were occupied by friends and families as well as 51 seats reserved for individual bookings ,which consisted of 16 families. A sum of 5 tables were placed for outsiders and 2 tables were sponsored by staff and volunteers to accommodate certain old folks whose families were unable to attend.

The function began at about 11.10am with an opening speech by Ven Wei Wu on the meaning behind having a Father and Mothers day celebration.

At around 11.40am, two renditions of songs were performed by the Sunday school children accompanied by their Ai Xin Pa Pa and Ai Xin Ma Ma . A WCY resident Mr. Chew Hock Poh also took to the stage singing the song “ Old Mac Donald” with backup from the Sunday School Children. The Sunday school children then performed another song.

Once the performances were over, the Sunday school children began to distribute flowers to all the old folks. This was then followed by individual children presenting gifts to their aged parents or relatives as a sign of love and respect. Old folks who were without families were also presented with gifts from WCY.

While the families were enjoying their lunch, four sharing sessions were contributed by Mr. Lim Guat Choo, a WCY resident, Soon Ee, a WCY staff , Mr. Looi, a WCY Old folks’s son, and Miss Irene Chew, a WCY old folk’s daughter . The event ended at about 1.20pm, whereby the last item on the programme was a lucky draw session with 16 individual prizes and 5 table draws.

Remarks:

I consider this event to be very successful even though not all of the old folks' families were able to attend the gathering. However, at least a majority of them have shown care and concern , thus helping us to achieve our goal of making the old folks of Wan Ching Yuen happy.

My sincere thanks to all volunteers and staff, Shifu and the Sunday school children who helped to make this a successful event.
