Talk on SARS

Today, many places in the world are infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Many people feel anxious and restless due to their ignorance concerning the deasease. Till now, the root cause of this disease (SARS) is still largely unknown. Nevertheless, the health ministry has come up with certain basic preventive measures.

Thus, to ensure that the general public and the staff of Than Hsiang staff have a better understanding on SARS, two talks on the deadly disease were conducted in Than Hsiang.

Sister Kang Sok Meng conducted the first talk attended by all the staff of Than Hsiang concerning the signs and symptoms of SARS and how it can be transmitted. She also mentioned the basic preventive measures that can be taken when dealing with SARS patients. Sister Kang Sok Meng was formerly a staff nurse in The Specialist Center, Penang and a nutritional executive in Meadjohnson, Bristol Myers Squidd before joining Than Hsiang as the supervisor of Wan Ching Yuen, a home for senior citizens.

Dr. Goh Huck Kim, a nephrologist consultant, Island Hospital, conducted the second talk on SARS. Dr. Goh gave a brief account on how SARS had spread from China to the other places in the world. He gave a detailed explanation on the signs and symptoms, correct way of wearing face masks and hand washing as well as the meanings of certain medical terms used e.g. suspected cases, probable cases and quarantine. Many people from all walks of life turned up for the talk.
