To commemorate ancestors, show gratitude for parents' kindness, pray for the health and peace of living parents, and wish for the deceased to be free from suffering and attain happiness, Than Hsiang Temple organized a seven-day Filial Piety Dharma Assembly from the 19th to the 25th day of the seventh lunar month. During the assembly, devotees actively participated with sincere devotion to pay homage to the Buddha, recite sutras, listen to teachings, and dedicate merits to repay parental kindness through the Buddha's blessings.

Under the compassionate guidance of Venerable Abbot Wei Wu, Founder of Than Hsiang Temple, Lay Devotee Ricardo from Medan, Indonesia, underwent hair-cutting and ordination ceremonies at Than Hsiang Temple on September 9 and 10, officially taking the monastic vows and resolving to spread the Dharma for the benefit of all beings. Lay Devotee Ricardo is also the lay son of Master Hui Li.

The last day of the seventh lunar month marks the Sacred Birthday of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.

To reverently celebrate Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's sacred birthday, Than Hsiang Temple held a Grand Offering to the Buddha in the Great Compassion Hall on September 10 (29th day of the seventh lunar month). The ceremony expressed deep gratitude for Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's grand vow—"Not until the hells are empty will I become a Buddha"—and the spirit of filial piety and repaying kindness.

The Malaysian Buddhist Sangha Association (MBSA) held its 2026 Annual General Meeting on 30 August at the ground floor hall of Than Hsiang Temple in Penang. Following the conclusion of the meeting, a meritorious Sangha Offering Ceremony was held. A total of 19 monks and venerables representing both the Theravada and Mahayana traditions gathered together, embodying the spirit of harmony and unity within the Sangha.

The Sangha Offering Ceremony commenced with an opening by the emcee, Sister Wai Cheng and proceeded in a solemn and orderly manner.

The Ullambana Festival: A Celebration of Filial Piety and Gratitude

According to traditional folk beliefs, the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month is regarded as the day when the gates of the spirit realm are opened. In Buddhism, however, the seventh lunar month is known as the “Month of Filial Piety,” while the fifteenth day is also celebrated as “Buddha’s Joyful Day.”

On August 15, 2026 (the third day of the seventh lunar month), Than Hsiang Temple held a memorial service to commemorate the passing of Venerable Xiu Jing.

Venerable Xiu Jing was a revered elder in Than Hsiang Temple and the wider Buddhist community, as well as the ordaining master of Venerable Wei Wu, the founder of Than Hsiang Temple. His spirit of spreading the great love of Buddhism through the Four Immeasurables—loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity—remains deeply rooted in our hearts.

To commemorate the great compassion of Guanyin Bodhisattva in relieving the sufferings of all beings, Than Hsiang Temple in Penang held a series of activities from August 1 to 2, 2026 (the 19th and 20th days of the sixth lunar month) to honor "Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Enlightenment Day."

On the morning of August 1, devotees presented pure offerings to honor the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The Venerables led the congregation in the Grand Offering Before the Buddhas (Fo Qian Da Gong). Following the ritual, everyone followed the Venerables for the dedication of merits.
