The Lotus Sūtra is one of the most important sūtras in Mahayana Buddhism, and it is very influential in East Asia (countries like China, Japan, Korea, and so on).

We were delighted to welcome Venerable Pannyavaro to SAKWCY where he led a session attended by approximately 20 participants, including lay Buddhists, senior citizens, and committee members from SAKWCY.

Special guests, Sis Gladys and her husband Bro Stephen, who were visiting Penang, also attended. They had been invited by the President of SAKWCY, Venerable Zhen Nian.

On 4 Dec 2024, at 9 am, about 18 of us gathered at Sungai Ara Wan Ching Yuen to learn how to cook delicious vegetarian dishes from Venerable Zhen Sheng. The main purpose of the class was to do merits via meal Dana to Monastic Sangha and Wan Ching Yuen (WCY) senior citizens after the class.

Commemorate the death anniversary of Venerable Jing Xian

The 22nd day of the 10th lunar month marks the commemoration of Venerable Jing Xian.
On November22, 2024 at 10am, Than Hsiang Temple held a grand Offering before the Guan Yin statue at the Da Bei Dian. After that the devotees, led by the monks, proceeded to the Ancestral Hall to chant Sutras and transferred the merits in front of Jing Xian’s memorial tablet.

Birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva

21 October, 2024, the 19th day of the 9th lunar month is the Birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Than Hsiang Temple held a Noon Offering at 10:45 a.m. in the Da Bei Dian. More than one hundred devotees gathered to pray for themselves and their families by chanting and worshiping the Guanyin Bodhisattva under the guidance of the monks. Many of them opted for a vegetarian diet on this auspicious day.

Three Refuge and Five Precepts Ceremony

In celebration of the Guanyin Birthday, Than Hsiang Temple held a Three Refuge and Five Precepts ceremony on Sunday, October 20, 2024. A total of 17 devotees made the aspiration to come to Than Hsiang Temple to take refuge in the Three Jewels and received the Five Precepts.

The ceremony started at 2:30 p.m., after the prelude ceremony at the Da Bei Dian.

I still remember that the day before the event it rained almost all day, which made me a bit anxious. I hoped that we would be blessed with a sunny day on 19/10. Sure enough, Saturday morning was a bright sunny day. A total of 17 lay sangha members, along with Ven. Zhen Ru, participated in this half-day trip. We set off from Than Hsiang Temple with five members driven by Brother Teong Hock Lye. Sister Gaik Yen drove three members from the Sungai Ara area, while Sister Swee Tin and Siew Hong shared transport.

2024 Vegetarian Festival

From the 3rd to 11th October, 2024 (the first to the ninth day of the ninth month of the Lunar Calendar), Than Hsiang Temple organised the Ninth Month Vegetarian Food Festival to provide a good place for the general public to eat vegetarian food.

From 9.00am to 1.30pm daily, Than Hsiang Canteen attracted the public by offering affordable lunches. In addition, Than Hsiang Canteen also provide lunch box delivery to nearby factories, schools and residential areas.

Kōyasan is Mount Kōya.

Mount Kōya is a large temple settlement in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan to the south of Osaka.

You will find an incredible 117 Buddhist temples tucked away in the deep cedar forest in Kōyasan. 52 of which offer temple accommodations, called "shukubo," where travelers can stay overnight.
